Dear St. Stephen’s Families,
Over twenty years ago, I attended a workshop on positive discipline offered by the co-author of the book Positive Discipline, Jane Nelson. A few years later, I attended a two-day workshop that focused on Teaching Parenting the Positive Discipline Way. The principles of positive discipline have been my guides with my students and my children. The reason I fell in love with this approach to discipline was its alignment with Montessori education, which is based on love and respect for the child.
Where did we get the crazy idea that to make children do better, first, we must make them feel worse? Positive discipline approaches children with firmness, respect, and kindness. It is an approach that does not include excessive control or permissiveness.
Please join me and Ms. Kandece Money, our School Counselor, at the capstone of our Parent Education Series – Positive Discipline.
- Orientation and Primary parents are invited to attend on Friday, December 1
- Elementary through Middle Years parents are invited to attend on Friday, December 8
- We will meet in the Havens Center from 8:30-9:30 a.m.
To prepare for the meeting, I encourage you to read Positive Discipline A-Z: 1001 Solutions to Everyday Parenting Problems, which will guide our conversations. I would also encourage you to bring scenarios that you would like to discuss with the group or to email me scenarios in advance of the session.
I look forward to seeing many of you at Positive Discipline and to having productive discussions.
With gratitude,
Nahla
St. Stephen’s invites all families to Las Posadas on December 22, 2023, starting at 8:15 a.m. in the Nave.
Honoring the journey of Mary and Joseph, the event is a spiritual pilgrimage and a celebration of Christmas. Students will take on the roles of the nativity as they knock on symbolic doors, hoping to find a safe place for the birth of Jesus. We will celebrate the birth of Jesus with songs and dances inspired by Hispanic culture and language.
Campaign Update
We challenged you on October 16 to make this year’s Annual Fund launch a great success and you delivered! The 2023 Annual Fund Campaign is off to a tremendous start. We are sincerely grateful to YOU, our philanthropic partners – trustees, parents, grandparents, faculty, and staff. Because of your generosity, we have achieved more than half our goal of $185,000 in less than two weeks! Can you imagine what impact we will have achieved by the end of the campaign?
If you have made your commitment to the Annual Fund, thank you. If you have not had an opportunity to give or pledge your support, please consider doing so TODAY! The sooner your contributions are received, the sooner we can begin to put those dollars to good use. See below for just some of the ways your gift to the Annual Fund supports St. Stephen’s.
What Initiatives does the Annual Fund support?
- Campus Beautification: Making improvements and upgrades, such as adding new outdoor learning materials, installing shading structures on the main playground and ensuring child-friendly safety measures to our campus.
- Professional Development: Providing certification and continuing education opportunities for our dedicated faculty and staff so that they can do more to enhance our students’ journey at St. Stephen’s.
- Program Development: Enhancing classroom projects and activities including fine arts and STEM to ensure every child from Orientation to 8th grade can be better positioned for lifelong learning.
- Technology and Equipment: Ensuring that our students, faculty, and staff have state-of-the-art equipment including educational software, laptops, and adding upgrades to our Information Technology infrastructure.
- Where Most Needed: Emergencies happen. Having resources available to address these unexpected incidents when they occur allows us to continue to focus on our mission rather than how we will meet these demands. The Annual Fund provides unrestricted operating dollars to the school. When you give dollars where most needed, it allows us to place funds in areas that need the most attention.
Bulldog Compliments
At St. Stephen’s, we have an easy way for anyone in the St. Stephen’s community to show their appreciation for a faculty, staff, or leadership team member. We call it sending a “Bulldog Compliment.”
Here is how it works. Click the Send A Bulldog Compliment image and follow the prompts. It only takes a few clicks, and you are done.
All compliments are anonymous and will be sent to the person (or persons) you choose to recognize. There is no limit to how many you can send, so be as generous as you wish!
